the biggest challenge

CEO:

What is the biggest challenge for CEOS?

Walt:

I was in the UK interviewing a famous business writer, teacher and observer. I asked him the same question, only in a slightly different way.

I asked him what he saw as the three most critical issues facing CEOs.

He sighed deeply and said, “People, people and let's see, yes, people.”

CEO:

People??

Walt:

Yes. You’ve had some success as a CEO; otherwise you wouldn’t be here.

HOWEVER your path forward, and the quality of the journey is predicated on your skill at selecting good people and growing a community. Leading an enterprise requires people skills, connecting skills, the ability to inspire and lead. It is all about people.

By the way, an important early developmental step is to build a supporting leadership team.

CEO:

What if I don't want a team? People are complicated.

Walt:

Yes, people are complicated, but look, commerce requires community - people.

After developing great products or services, the ability to form effective teams is the key to business success.

CEO:

So, the big the challenges are around people. Is it just about teams or is there more?

Walt:

Yes, there's is more.

Your employees are all what I’d call “willing volunteers” who have a vested interest in performing well.

You need to find good people, retain them, and motivate them to do the best work they can possibly do.

CEO:

And I can learn that?

...of course I can, and I can get help from the outside...

Walt:

Right.

And one last thing. Remember that although your people will be measured by the work they do, you will be measured by how successful the whole company is.

Your success is entirely dependent on them.
